Your laws are always fair; help me to understand them, and I shall live.
So as I closed my Bible, God instantly gave me this analogy:
God: The moral law is like any of God's laws. What is the simplest physical law you know? Gravity. So compare my moral law to gravity. What would it be like if you could chose to obey my law of gravity or not? What would happen?
Me: Well, I would float off into space and eventually die.
Yes, but what if you were clever? What if you picked up a rock before drifting off? You could jump over your house and you would eventually come back to the ground safe and sound. How would that make you feel?
I would feel totally free and in control of my life. I would be way better off than others and would be able to do things impossible for those obeying your law of gravity.
Yes! So how does this compare to obeying my moral law?
I suppose it would be like cheating others in business, or lying to get what I want, or stealing to get what I want. It would give me an advantage over others but if I did it just when I wanted to or needed to, then I wouldn't feel very wrong yet I would be benefiting from my disobedience.
Yes! You could disobey the law of gravity to climb up hill but obey it when going down hill. You would feel justified when things are going badly for you to break my law but would appease your guilt when life went easy.
So what does the rock you would use to pull you back to earth be like in the moral realm?
It would be like being a member of a church or having a good friend that obeys your law that could pull me back to sanity after I disobeyed.
Yes! Now suppose almost everyone was doing the same kind of tricks against my law as you were? What would that make those obeying my law look like?
They would look pretty dumb. Having to walk up every mountain and take long winding roads to get to where they wanted to go. They would just look like total losers!
Wouldn't those that chose to disobey my law eventually just keep a rock in their pocket and disobey all the time and not even think about it? What would happen to them if they lost their precious rock?
They would float away and not be able to come back to the ground.
Yes! This is what will happen to all of those that cheat my law. They will lose their rock and I will have them in derision! And what will happen to those that never cheated my law?
They would look pretty smart in the end.
Yes! I see all this cheating going on. I know who obey me and who chose to play games with my law. So what verse comes to mind when you hear this story?
Job 36:7 He withdraws not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.
